For 25 years, Karuna-Shechen has been working closely with communities in India, Nepal, and Tibet.
Projects are developed by listening to communities and involving them actively. We do not treat poverty as an isolated issue: health, education, access to water, agriculture, and economic development are all mutually reinforcing. It is this local, participatory, and holistic model that gives our actions their strength and sustainability.

At this stage in my life, Karuna-Shechen's projects are what matter most to me. I hope the association will continue its work for a long time to come, all together!

These portraits are first and foremost encounters: glances, voices, lives that tell us much more than just about projects. They weave a common narrative, that of different people from diverse backgrounds, brought together by the same spirit of solidarity.

Together, these stories weave a certainty: when we listen to communities, act with them, and take care of all aspects of life, something profound changes, and for a long time to come.

A local, community-based, and holistic approach

A locally conceived and implemented initiative

Our actions are born and grow close to the ground. The teams that design and implement projects live in the regions they support, speak the language, and understand the daily realities of families. This local presence allows us to gain a detailed understanding of needs, constraints, seasons, and lifestyles.

Rather than applying ready-made solutions, we tailor each project to the context: the size of the village, the resources available, and the priorities expressed. It is this patient and deep-rooted proximity that makes change possible and sustainable.

Addressing multiple and interrelated causes

Poverty has multiple and closely interlinked causes: poor health, lack of water, schools that are far away or poorly equipped, low incomes, difficult-to-cultivate land, etc. We respond to these causes in an integrated manner, within the same territory, with a coherent set of mutually reinforcing actions.

The effects are chain reactions: healthcare enables education, a closer water source frees up time, and school opens up new prospects. It is a rigorous approach in terms of monitoring, and deeply human in terms of relationships.

Deciding and acting together

Our compass is simple: listen → decide → act → measure, together. Projects are built with communities, not in their place. Families, local groups, and village committees participate in the choices: which needs to address first, which solutions to implement, and at what pace to move forward.

Depending on their means, each person contributes a small amount of funding, time, or commitment: this changes everything. At the end of each project, we see pride, dignity, and joy. We then understand that the action will last, because it moves forward at the pace and with the commitment of the communities themselves.
