Silu Bhar
Agriculture as path of empowerment
Silu Bhar lives with her husband and their three children in a remote village in the Bijaynagar municipality, Nepal. Like many women in her region, she once carried the full weight of household responsibilities, while her husband worked tirelessly as a laborer, but it was never quite enough to provide a decent living for the family.
Everything began to shift when Silu attended an information session about Karuna’s kitchen garden program. After joining a women’s group to save together and learn new skills like agriculture and digital literacy, she mobilized more women in her community, and together, they decided to form a group. She naturally became the chairperson.
Since then, she leads meetings, manages group savings and small loans, and shares knowledge that she gained. Her kitchen garden feeds her family healthy food and provides an income. Through her portrait, Silu shows us that change often begins where we least expect it: in a garden, a gesture, a decision.
